How to Winterize Your Home
Updated: Nov 26, 2021
Winter is upon us, which means specific home maintenance. Here are a few things you can do as a home owner and renter to ensure your house is well prepared:
Check the gutters- ensure they are clean to prevent potential ice dams. Consider buying gutter guards to avoid needing to clean your gutters.
Do winter maintenance to your hose bibs. Watch this quick video to see how it's done https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=px2O5I7B7qs
Install weather stripping in your doors and windows to prevent cold air from entering your home, or hot air escaping it. This also helps lower your power bills.
Have your heating checked. Your heating system needs to be serviced at least once a year to clear any build up and ensure it functions efficiently.
Check your fireplace- there may be animals nesting or creosote to clear out. Have an annual check before starting your first fire.
Make sure your furnace works efficiently- replacing the filters about every 3 months will ensure your furnace works more effectively.
Inspect your roof- check for broken, frayed or missing pieces of shingles. As well clear any debris, and check your attic and ceilings for leaks. Ensure the attic is well ventilated to prevent mold or mildew.
