School’s Out! 10 Fun Things to Do with Kids in Northern Virginia This Summer
When the school year ends, many parents find themselves asking the same question: "How do we keep the kids entertained all summer long?"
The good news is that Northern Virginia is packed with family-friendly activities that combine fun, learning, adventure, and outdoor exploration. Whether you're looking to fill a weekend, create a summer bucket list, or simply get the kids out of the house, here are some of the best ways that I spend it with my step-daughter in Northern Virginia.
1. Visit a Local Farm
Northern Virginia is home to several family-friendly farms where children can meet animals, take wagon rides, and learn about agriculture.
2. Take a Family-Friendly Hike
Summer is the perfect time to explore Northern Virginia's natural beauty. My favorite is Great Falls or going on the W&OD Trail.
3. Explore Museums That Kids Actually Enjoy
Being in Northern Virginia you are so close to all that Washington DC offers. So many museums to visit with interactive exhibits, aviation displays, science experiences, and hands-on activities that encourage curiosity and creativity there isn’t a lack of things to do.
4. Create a Summer Reading Challenge
Your local library can become one of the best summer destinations. Many libraries offer children's programs, reading incentives, story times, crafts, and educational activities that help kids stay engaged while maintaining important learning skills. I can tell you my step-daughter loves the scavenger hunts our local library organizes.
5. Go on a Nature Scavenger Hunt
Turn a regular walk into an adventure. Create a checklist that includes items like butterflies, birds, wildflowers, squirrels, unique leaves, and interesting rocks. Kids love having a mission, and it encourages them to pay attention to the world around them.
6. Try Indoor Play Centers on Rainy Days
Not every summer day is sunny. For those rainy days try indoor play spaces, trampoline parks, climbing facilities, bowling alleys, and family entertainment centers. These places provide excellent options when the weather doesn't cooperate.
7. Enjoy Outdoor Movies and Concerts
Summer evenings are perfect for spending time outside together. In my neighborhood. Rosslyn, they have movie nights at our local Gateway Park. These are so fun and always a great time!
8. Visit the National Botanical Garden
Beautiful gardens offer more than flowers in downtown DC. Kids can explore walking paths, spot pollinators, learn about plants, and enjoy open spaces that encourage curiosity and discovery.
9. Go Biking as a Family
Northern Virginia's extensive trail system makes family bike rides a great summer activity. Whether you're exploring paved pathways or local parks, biking helps children stay active while discovering new places.
10. Explore Your Own Community Like a Tourist
Sometimes the best adventures are right around the corner. I can’t tell you how much I have not seen in Washington DC and we live so close to it. Try visiting a new park, a local ice cream shop, a smaller museum or go for a drive to a new town with a historic district.
Make the Most of Summer in Northern Virginia
One of the many reasons families love living in Northern Virginia is the incredible variety of activities available throughout the year. There is no shortage of ways to create lasting memories with your kids this summer.
Whether you're spending the day at a park, exploring a museum, or hiking a local trail, summer is the perfect time to enjoy everything our community has to offer.
